  Kidnapping epidemic: Fundraising for ransom persists, Ekiti pupils’ families pay N15m. Despite warnings by the Federal Government against crowd-funding for ransoms, the practice has continued to gain ground with the abductees and their families raising funds from relatives, friends, and social media to secure the release of kidnapped victims. Families of abductees told The PUNCH on Sunday that they disregarded the government’s warning because they feared the victims might be killed or harmed if they failed to pay the ransom. In Ekiti State, pupils and teachers of Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, Emure Ekiti, who were abducted last week, regained their freedom in the early hours of Sunday.   Abductions: 15 states enlist 50,000 vigilantes against kidnappers In a move to push back the rampaging kidnappers and bandits operating freely across the country, 15 state governors have assembled no fewer than 52, 106-man vigilante squads to battle the hoodlums. Officials in Delta, Kano, Plateau, Sokoto, and 11 other states told The PUNCH that their governors had cobbled together a coalition of vigilantes, hunters, and neighbourhood watch groups to complement the police and other security forces. Scores of Nigerians have been abducted across the country in the past weeks, with the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Lagos, and some other states coming under the abductors’ siege. Though the authorities deployed troops and police operatives, this did not alleviate the security challenge.

Osang was beheaded on Wednesday night when the gunmen entered his home on a lane connecting Enen Afaha and Afaha Ube, a suburb of Uyo City. It was learnt that the invasion of the police officer happened at 8.30 p.m, according to Punch. A source from the community revealed that  the hoodlums gained entry into the deceased's compound and began firing randomly to scare away residents and passersby .   Oyebanji Orders Security Agencies To Fish Out Killers Of Two Ekiti Monarchs - Politics - Nairaland condemns attack Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has condemned Monday’s dastardly attack in Oke-Ako area in Ikole Local Government, which led to the gruesome killing of two traditional rulers; and ordered security agencies in the state to fish out the killers.   Impeached Ogun Speaker Oluomo accused of N2.5bn fraud arraigned in court. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday arraigned the impeached Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo for alleged N2.5 billion fraud. He was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abeokuta, along with two other principal officers of the Assembly, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji. The were accused of misappropriation of public funds amounting to N2,5 billion. The former speaker was alleged to have committed the offence while he was still Speaker of the House in 2022 However, the case could not continue on Monday following the absence of the EFCC’s counsel, with the judge O.O Okeke adjourning the case to 29 February and 1 March, 2024. Aivoji was released four days after he was abducted on Thursday. Aivoji and some other party chieftains were abducted at the Ogere area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Thursday while returning from the party’s Stakeholders’ Zonal Caucus meeting convened by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and held in Ibadan, the state capital. The PUNCH NEWSPAPER The Nigeria Police Force has said the identities of three officers who stopped a motorist in Lagos to demand his tinted glass permit without their ID cards and uniforms have been known.   NBA sues Kenny Ogungbe, culture minister over NYSC certificate The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law has urged the court to sack the Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, from office for allegedly violating the National Youth Service Corps Act. The organisation also asked the court to compel the NYSC to nullify the certificates given to Musawa and a music promoter, Kenny Ogungbe, alleging that the issuance of the certificate was contrary to the provisions of NYSC Act Cap N84.LFN 2024. The plaintiffs in the suit marked FCH/ABJ/05/90/2024 are the Chairman, NBA-SPIDEL, John Aikpokpo-Martins, and Secretary, NBA-SPIDEL, Funmi Adeogun.
