  82-year-old Nangolo Mbumba Sworn In As Fourth Namibian President - Foreign Affairs - Nairaland Eighty-two-year-old Dr. Nangolo Mbumba has been sworn in as the fourth President. Mbumba is Namibia’s former Vice President and has held the position since 2018. He was sworn in on Sunday by Chief Justice Peter Shivute in Windhoek, the country’s capital. Born on August 15, 1941, Mbumba is a member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). He headed several Namibian ministries: Agriculture, Water and Rural Development (1993–1996), Finance (1996–2003), Information and Broadcasting (2003–2005) Education (2005–2010) and Safety and Security (2010–2012). From 2012 to 2017, he was the secretary-general of SWAPO. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, has rejected his appointment as the ward congress electoral committee chairman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in Edo State. The PUNCH NEWSPAPER A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday issued a warrant for the arrest of the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Edison Ehie over his alleged involvement in the burning of the state House of Assembly. The court also ordered that Jinjiri Bala, Happy Benedict,  Progress Joseph, Adokiye Oyagiri, and Chibuike Peter also known as Rambo be arrested for allegedly participating in some criminal activities. The PUNCH NEWSPAPER The Senate, on Wednesday, through its Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, summoned the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, to appear before it on Tuesday next week to answer questions on the state of the economy and the free fall of naira in the forex market. The Committee, chaired by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC Lagos East), met on Wednesday when the naira plummeted to N1,520 to a US dollar and resolved to summon the CBN governor on the way out.   Impeached Ogun Speaker Oluomo accused of N2.5bn fraud arraigned in court. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday arraigned the impeached Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo for alleged N2.5 billion fraud. He was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abeokuta, along with two other principal officers of the Assembly, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji. The were accused of misappropriation of public funds amounting to N2,5 billion. The former speaker was alleged to have committed the offence while he was still Speaker of the House in 2022 However, the case could not continue on Monday following the absence of the EFCC’s counsel, with the judge O.O Okeke adjourning the case to 29 February and 1 March, 2024.   Confusion in opposition parties over merger Plans by Nigeria’s three main opposition parties to form a formidable force ahead of the 2027 general elections in a bid to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may have hit a cul-de-sac, as key actors in the on-going arrangements are unwilling to shift grounds. In separate interviews with  Saturday Sun,  leaders of the three main opposition parties – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), expressed divergent views on the proposed merger. While some admitted that moves were underway, others dismissed the ongoing talks as unrealistic. Some analysts have also noted that the individual presidential ambition of each of the major actors in the three opposition parties – Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the NNPP – is a major reason the planned merger might not materialize.

Speaking while assenting to the Local Government Amendment Bill at the Government House, Ilorin, AbdulRazaq said, “We are looking forward to holding the local government elections very shortly.” In a statement signed by Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor late Friday, AbdulRazaq thanked the State House of Assembly for its legislative roles on the Local Government Elections Bill, which he noted now paves the way for the conduct of the elections. The local government election was held last in the state in October 2017.

  $500,000 bribe: S’Court affirms ex-lawmaker, Farouk Lawan’s jail term The PUNCH NEWSPAPER The Supreme Court, on Friday, dismissed an appeal by a former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, against the judgments of the lower court which imprisoned him. A Federal Capital Territory High Court had sentenced Lawan to seven years imprisonment for receiving a $500,000 bribe while serving as the chairman of the House’s ad-hoc committee investigating the fuel subsidy fraud in 2012. The trial judge, Angela Otaluka, held that Lawan demanded $3m and received $500,000 from Femi Otedola in 2012 to remove Otedola’s oil company, Zenon Oil and Gas, from the list of firms indicted for fraud in the fuel subsidy regime. She also held that Lawan was guilty of all three counts of corruption and bribery.

 Ekiti Chief Judge, Oyewole Adeyeye, Hospitalized As Court Wall Collapses On Him Ekiti State Chief Judge, Justice Oyewole Adeyeye, escaped death on Wednesday, when a section of the state high court complex collapsed on him while in the office. Justice Adeyeye is said to be currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital in the state. Daily Trust gathered that the incident happened around close of work on Wednesday. The judge was still in his chamber at the time of the collapse. The incident may not be unconnected with structural deficit worsened by the torrential rainfall. No life was lost during the collapse but the Chief Judge reportedly sustained serious injury as a section of the office collapsed on him. It took serious efforts from workers before the judge was rescued from the rubble.
