WHAT HAPPENED? Leverkusen announced the signing of Swiss international and former Arsenal captain for a fee of €25 million (£21m/$27m).


THE BIGGER PICTURE: The 30-year-old midfielder had a resurgence under current Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and finished the season with seven goals and seven assists in the league. The Swiss international amassed 297 appearances for the Gunners during his time at the club, winning two FA Cups. He returns to the Bundesliga having spent his early days at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Pelagic Research Services, the company that operated the ROV that made the previous debris findings, said on Wednesday that its team had successfully completed off-shore operations and was now in the process of demobilisation after 10 days of work.

  Outrage as teacher allegedly flogs Lagos pupil to death THE PUNCH NEWS ONLINE Pandemonium erupted at Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School in Oko Afo, Lagos, as pupils of the school protested the demise of one of their colleagues who was allegedly flogged to death by a teacher. The incident was said to have occurred on Thursday when the deceased, identified as David Babadipo, was allegedly flogged by the teacher whose name was given as Oluwale. It was gathered that the 16-year-old who had been ill for some days was rushed to a hospital after he was flogged where he was confirmed dead. In a video seen by our correspondent on Friday, many pupils of the school could be seen running helter-skelter within the school compound and outside its premises.
